Watching it Rot

We had the opportunity to watch the entire lifecycle of lepidoptera. I purchased some butterfly milkweed, placed it outside and waited. We watched as a butterfly fed on the nectar then returned to lay her eggs. I then brought the plants into our screened porch. We waited and then noticed very tiny caterpillars feeding on the leaves. Soon they were big caterpillars. They made chrysallises before our eyes. We waited and then watched as they inflated their wings after hatching out. During the whole process we read the Very Hungry Caterpillar every day and T. seemed to understand what he was watching in real life and what would take place next. Even so, he was a little weary of the creatures once they came out and did not want to hold one.
